Gordes Travel Guide: From Hilltop Views to Lavender Dreams

Gordes is among the 156 villages classified as “The Most Beautiful Villages in France”, due to its architecture, charm, and its position on the hilltop. In fact, the best place to see Gordes is before you get to town!
Why Gordes Belongs on Your Provence Itinerary
There are several vantage points where you can get spectacular photos of this unique village (just follow the line of cars!). Getting the right shot requires some patience! You will no doubt recognize some scenes from this famous village thanks to Peter Mayle’s book A Year in Provence. The Hotel de la Renaissance was also featured in the spin-off movie “A Good Year”.

What to see in Gordes
Château de Gordes
A jewel of the city, this former medieval fortress was classified as a historical monument in 1931. The history of the château is intimately linked to the famille “de Gordes”, one of the oldest in Provence.
Église Saint-Firmin
The church dedicated to Saint Firmin, patron saint of the village, was built in the 18th century, and was restored in 2017.
Saint Firmin Palace Cellars
One of my favorite discoveries in Gordes is this semi-troglodytic site—partly built by hand, partly carved right into the rock. It’s now recognized as a National Heritage Site, and for good reason. As you wander through the underground passageways, you’ll find remnants of daily life from the Middle Ages: an old olive oil mill, grain silos, cisterns, and more.
It feels like you’re uncovering a secret chapter of Gordes’s history—quiet, cool, and a little bit magical. Definitely worth taking the time to explore!
Tuesday Market in the Village Center
I never miss a chance to peruse a Provençal market, and with stunning views at every turn, this is one is definitely a favorite.

Don’t Miss This Boutique: International Style Addict
There are so many unique boutiques, but you have to wander into ISA- International Style Addict where they go above and beyond! Where else can you find a chair made entirely of stuffed animals?

Abbaye de Sénanque and Its Famous Lavender Fields
The Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque was founded the 9th of the Calends of July 1148 (23th of June) by Cistercian monks from Mazan in Ardeche. A perpetual place of prayer, visits are limited but available. (Check ahead if you plan to visit the interior). I admit, I have never stepped inside the Abbey, although I have been here multiple times to see the stunning lavender fields, which are among the most photographed in France! Peak photo-ops take place in late June and July!

Village des Bories: Stone Architecture at Its Best
Dating between the 17th and 19th centuries, the “bories” are the most successful and spectacular examples of what is known as dry-stone building, which consists of selecting stones and assembling them without mortar or binder. They are quite spectacular to see. As there is a whole village here, it takes some time to explore them all. Open all year from 9 am to sunset.

The Lavender Museum: Scents, Stories, and Picnics
Located just 10 minutes from Gordes, The Lavender Museum Luberon is open all year with themed visits, activities, workshops and events. Enjoy a picnic in the garden! Lavender blooms from late May to mid-August, depending on weather conditions. 276 Route de Gordes – Coustellet

Where to Eat and Drink in Gordes
Oh My Juice: A Fresh Find Just Below the Village

Perfectly situated next to the large parking lot you will find Oh My Juice just waiting to quench your thirst or serve you a sweet treat!
I made this discovery as I walked down the path from the nearby Hotel des Bories & Spa (more about that later). A Detox (fresh mint, apple and lime) Juice was exactly what I needed to trek back up the hill!
Les Caves du Palais Saint Firmin: Wine Below the Surface
When you are ready for something a bit stronger, head to Les Caves du Palais St Firmin to sip wines in the underground caves.
Where to Stay in Style
Hôtel Les Bories & Spa – Peaceful Luxury with a View
You owe yourself this treat! Les Bories & Spa is the ultimate in indulgence, the rooms are large, comfortable and have every amenity, including a balcony with a stunning view over the countryside.

Located slightly out of the village, you feel away from it all, while still close to all you want to do. Walk past the heliport, (yes, there is a heliport) for a scenic stroll into town. Be sure to reserve dinner in the gourmet restaurant.
La Bastide de Gordes – Elegance in the Heart of the Village
If you would rather stay right in town, another spectacular option is La Bastide de Gordes. Every luxury, every detail – perfection. You feel a part of history here. Dine on the patio at l’Orangerie.
I am sure there are other 3-star and 4-star hotels in Gordes, but aren’t you worth this indulgence?
