Avignon: Stroll Through History, Chocolate, and UNESCO Wonders

Walk (or Dance) on the Pont d’Avignon
It’s probably the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Avignon—Le Pont Saint-Bénézet, or Pont d’Avignon. While you don’t have to dance on it, it’s absolutely worth a walk!
This medieval bridge, once spanning the Rhône, now stands partially intact, offering lovely views of the river and the surrounding city. Whether you’re snapping photos or just taking in the moment, it’s an essential stop.
Step into History at the Palais des Papes
Just a short walk from the bridge, the Palais des Papes dominates Avignon’s skyline.

As the largest Gothic palace in the west and a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s a spectacular dive into the 14th century, when Avignon was the seat of the papacy.
Step inside to explore the grand halls, chapels, and fresco-covered rooms that once housed the most powerful religious figures of the era.
If walls could talk, these would have some serious stories to tell!
Discover the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms
Sitting right next to the Palais des Papes, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms is often overlooked—but don’t make that mistake!

Dating back to the 12th century, this Romanesque cathedral is crowned with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary that watches over the city.
Inside, it’s a mix of history and serenity, with impressive frescoes, sculptures, and the tomb of Pope John XXII. It’s the perfect quiet retreat after exploring the grandeur of the Papal Palace.
Take in the Views from the Jardin des Doms
After exploring the cathedral, head behind the Palais des Papes to Jardin des Doms, a beautifully landscaped park perched on the heights of Rocher des Doms. It’s an ideal spot to take a break, with shady paths, a small pond, and sweeping views over the Rhône River, Mont Ventoux, and beyond. A great place to catch your breath before continuing your Avignon adventure!
Hop on Le Petit Train for a City Tour
Avignon is compact and walkable, but if you want to get an overview without too much effort, Le Petit Train is a great option. It’s easy to find near the Palais des Papes and takes you on a guided loop of the city, giving you a better sense of where everything is (and maybe saving your legs a bit for later!).
A Sweet Stop at Le Comptoir de Mathilde
This one is non-negotiable—Le Comptoir de Mathilde is a must for chocolate lovers. Located at 32 rue de la Balance, this rustic yet elegant shop reels you in with its charming chalkboard signs, wooden crates stacked with goodies, and—best of all—free tastings! From handcrafted chocolate bars to indulgent spreads, it’s dangerously tempting. But don’t worry, you can walk it off by strolling the 2.7-mile ramparts afterward.
Experience the Buzz at Les Halles Market
If you love markets (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), then don’t miss Les Halles. This covered market is open every day except Monday from 6 am to 1:30 pm (2 pm on weekends) and is packed with everything from fresh produce and cheeses to baked goods and local specialties. It’s the kind of place where you grab a little of this, a little of that, and suddenly you have the perfect picnic.

Orange & Pont du Gard
If you’re still hungry for history (or just looking for more stunning sites), head to the nearby town of Orange to visit:
- The Roman Theatre of Orange – One of the best-preserved Roman theaters in the world, still hosting performances today.
- The Triumphal Arch – A magnificent Roman monument that once marked the entrance to the city.
Or, for something even older, make your way to Pont du Gard, a remarkable Roman aqueduct that’s stood for nearly 2,000 years. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic by the water, with plenty of room to relax and admire this engineering marvel.
A Creative Detour: Esprit Mosaïque
For something a little different, mosaic artist Valérie Nicoladzé welcomes visitors to her workshop, Esprit Mosaïque, just outside Avignon (10 rue du Compagnonnage, 30133 Les Angles). If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the ancient art of mosaics—or maybe even try it yourself—this is a wonderful, hands-on experience.
Staying in Avignon
Place de l’Horloge, or Clock Tower Square, is in the heart of Avignon. It’s here that you will find restaurants and cafés, but the clock isn’t really visible from the square!
Hotel d’Europe ***** has a wonderful location in the center of town, providing not only exceptional views, but luxury accommodations, and a gourmet restaurant.

La Mirande ***** could be the perfect setting for a French Downton Abbey equivalent. No expenses were spared to carefully restore what had survived from the past and to replenish, where necessary, the features of the age of enlightenment for the revival of a nobleman’s townhouse in the 18th century.
Hotel de l’Horloge **** is located right in the city center and couldn’t be more convenient or comfortable.
