Granville wasn’t on my radar at first—but now I can’t imagine Normandy without it.

Perched dramatically on the coast and often called the “Monaco of the North,” this old fishing town has a personality all its own. A little salty, a little glamorous, and filled with surprises around every cobblestone corner, Granville invites you to slow down, look closer, and stay a little longer than planned.

Where History Meets the Sea: Exploring Haute Ville

Originally a fortified island, Granville wears its maritime past proudly.

Wander through Haute Ville, the charming old town perched high on the cliffs, and you’ll find narrow streets winding past weathered stone houses and remnants of old ramparts.

The reward? Stunning views over the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel, especially at sunset. When the sky glows pink and orange and fishing boats glide silently into the port below, it feels almost magical.

For the adventurous, it’s even possible to walk from Granville to Mont-Saint-Michel — but beware of quicksand along the way. A guide is essential for this unforgettable trek.

A Fashionable Surprise: The Christian Dior Museum

One of Granville’s most delightful surprises awaits in a seaside villa.

Yes, Christian Dior was born here, and his childhood home—Villa Les Rhumbs—is now a museum dedicated to his life and legacy. Strolling through the elegant house and gardens overlooking the sea feels like stepping inside one of his classic designs.

For fashion lovers and beauty seekers alike, it’s a must-visit.

Life in the Lower Town: A Taste of the Sea

While Haute Ville charms with history and views, the lower town offers a lively contrast.

Here, boats bob in the harbor, the fish market hums, and cozy cafés and crêperies line the streets.

I enjoyed a memorable lunch tucked near the port—moules marinières paired with crisp white wine and the sea breeze drifting through open windows. Simple, fresh, and utterly blissful.

Join the Fun: Carnaval de Granville

If you happen to visit in February, prepare for a spectacle.

The Carnaval de Granville is one of the oldest and largest in France, even recognized by UNESCO for its cultural importance.

Far from a polished tourist event, this is a raucous, five-day celebration full of giant satirical floats, marching bands, confetti storms, and cheeky humor aimed at politicians and pop culture alike.

Don’t miss the quirky tradition of locals in costume pelting confetti down from Haute Ville balconies — it’s hilarious, chaotic, and truly unforgettable.

Day Trips and Coastal Escapes: Chausey Islands

Granville’s sense of adventure doesn’t end with the town itself.

From the port, ferries to the Chausey Islands offer day trips to one of Europe’s hidden gems. Expect turquoise waters, white sands, and quiet tide pools — yes, right here in Normandy.

It’s the perfect way to round out your visit with a bit of island serenity.

Why Granville Stole My Heart

Granville captures everything I love about traveling in France.

It’s authentic, filled with character, and always ready to surprise. Whether you come for the fashion, history, seafood, or coastal beauty, this underrated gem delivers—all with a little extra salt and sass in the air.

Stay a little longer—you won’t regret it.
