Sitting along the banks of the Saône River, Mâcon feels just a little different from the rest of Burgundy — and that’s part of its charm. This is the southern gateway to the region, where a gentler climate and a touch of Mediterranean influence create a town that feels lively, friendly, and easy to enjoy.

Surrounded by vineyards and shaped by centuries of trade and tradition,

Mâcon is both historic and down-to-earth. It’s a place where families live and thrive; a place where you can admire colorful façades, stroll along the river, sip local wines, and enjoy a pace of life that’s refreshingly relaxed. Whether stopping for a day or staying a while, Mâcon makes you feel right at home.

A Town Steeped in History

Mâcon has been welcoming travelers for centuries. The Romans settled here, drawn by its position along the Saône, and the town later flourished as a key trading hub in the Middle Ages. Over time, Mâcon saw rulers come and go, but through it all, it remained an important link between north and south.

Today, you can still see many reminders of its rich past:

Pont Saint-Laurent

This iconic stone bridge, dating back to the 11th century, once served as a vital crossing of the Saône. Walking across it offers beautiful views of the town and river — and a sense of how many have crossed here before you.

Maison de Bois

The oldest house in Mâcon (built between 1490 and 1510), this half-timbered gem stands out with its carved wooden figures and colorful façade. Today it houses a café — a perfect spot to pause during your stroll.

Cathédrale Saint-Vincent

While much of the original medieval structure was destroyed, parts of the former cathedral still remain and are worth a visit for a glimpse of Mâcon’s religious heritage.

Église Saint-Pierre

Located in the town center, this 19th-century church was designed by architect Pierre Bossan (who also designed the Basilica of Fourvière in Lyon). Its twin towers and neo-Romanesque style make it a striking part of Mâcon’s skyline.

Musée des Ursulines

Housed in a former convent, this museum covers Mâcon’s history and culture, from archaeology to local art. It also pays tribute to the town’s most famous son, Alphonse de Lamartine.

Following in Lamartine’s Footsteps

Poet, politician, and native of Mâcon, Lamartine is celebrated throughout the town. You can follow a walking trail dedicated to his life and legacy, which takes you past key sites tied to his story — including monuments, gardens, and streets that bear his name.

Exploring Mâcon: Easy to See, Easy to Enjoy

Mâcon’s old town is very walkable, and part of its charm is taking your time to wander. Along the way, you’ll find riverside paths, hidden courtyards, and plenty of places to stop and soak in the relaxed atmosphere.

The Saône River Promenade

The river is central to life in Mâcon. Strolling along the promenade — especially at sunset — is simple but memorable. You’ll pass cafés, benches, and boats slowly drifting by.

Place aux Herbes and Old Town Streets

The old center is filled with lively squares, small shops, and casual restaurants. It’s easygoing and full of local life.

Roche du Solutré

A short, scenic 15-minute drive, winding through the prestigious vines of Pouilly-Fuissé, brings you to the natural treasure of La Roche du Solutré.  Offering breathtaking, panoramic views of rolling vineyards, it is worth the short climb.  There is also an important prehistoric museum on the site.

Mâcon and Wine:

Southern Burgundy in a Glass

Mâcon sits right in the heart of the Mâconnais wine region, where Chardonnay is king. Wines here are fresh, friendly, and easy to love — often more approachable and affordable than those from further north.

Just beyond the town, villages like Pouilly-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé and Saint-Véran produce well-known wines. Visiting these vineyards offers a closer look at local winemaking traditions.

For those staying in town, there’s no shortage of ways to explore Burgundy’s wine culture:

Cité des Climats & Vins de Bourgogne (Mâcon site)

This new, interactive space is dedicated to sharing the story of Burgundy’s vineyards and wines. Here in Mâcon, the Cité focuses on the southern part of the region. It’s a great starting point to learn about the famed “Climats” and understand what makes each vineyard unique. Exhibits, tastings, and workshops make this a must-see for wine lovers.

Wine Bars and Shops

Several shops in town offer tastings or wines by the glass, so you can sample local styles without leaving the city center.

Wine Festivals and Events

Look for seasonal fairs and events, where local producers gather to showcase their wines.

Flavors of Mâcon: Simple, Seasonal, and Delicious

Food in Mâcon is comforting and full of regional character. The influence of Burgundy is clear, but the southern location adds a touch of Mediterranean flair.

Poulet à la Crème

A local favorite — chicken cooked slowly in a creamy white wine sauce.

Charolais Beef

Raised nearby, this tender beef appears in classic Burgundian dishes and simple preparations alike.

Local Cheeses and Goat Cheese

Perfect alongside a glass of Mâconnais white wine.

Riverside Dining

Many restaurants near the Saône offer relaxed meals with beautiful views — especially in warmer months.
